2015 Fianchetto

Winemaker Notes:  XL vineyard consistently produces wines of intense concentration and structure. The 2015 Fianchetto wine has a deep ruby-purple color with a redolent bouquet of ripe black currant, blackberry, black plum, violet, gravel, and cigar tobacco on the bouquet. The full-bodied palate is very complex with precise notes of cassis, black cherry, gravel, cigar tobacco, incense, espresso, vanilla, and dark chocolate. Gentle herbal tones of dried thyme, lavender, and mint add significant interest to the core of fruit. The finish is very long with well delineated notes of cigar tobacco, violets, cedar, and cassis. An exquisitely balanced wine with high dry extract, firm tannic structure, and nervy acidity. Properly cellared, this wine should reach maturity in 8-10 years and drink well for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 152 hours. 100% native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during maceration and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: Elevage was 28 months in 80% new French oak from Troncais. After bottling the wine was aged in our cellar for 36 months prior to release. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very gently filtered using crossflow filtration.

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 92 Points - Dark red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, dark raspberry, licorice and bitter chocolate complemented by sexy spicy oak tones. Fine-grained, very ripe and classically dry, combining serious alcoholic clout and surprising energy. Plush, concentrated red berry flavors are lifted by a floral element that's rare for such a ripe Bordeaux blend. This powerful wine finishes with broad, dusty tannins and serious sweetness. Constant wind at this site typically results in small, thick-skinned berries, and Naravane noted that the tannins here can easily get out of whack. He presses the wine before it's fully dry and allows the fermentation to finish in barrels. (15.3% alcohol; aged for 28 months in 80% new Tronçais oak)
