2015 Tilting at Windmills

2015 Tilting at Windmills
2015 Tilting at Windmills

Winemaker Notes: Deep purple-ruby color with intensely perfumed aromatics: framboise, kirsch, black cherry, spice, vanilla, and minerals.  Ripe lush tannins from the Grenache and Syrah and some slightly firmer tannins from the Cabernet Sauvignon interplay beautifully with the vibrant acidity and higher fruit expression. The palate is rich and expansive with dominant notes of framboise, kirsch, cassis jam, and blackberry. There are also secondary notes of anise, graphite, bacon fat, and roasted herbs.  The finish is very long with notes of kirsch, scorched earth, and white pepper. Like previous vintages, this is a decadent mouthful of wine with refreshing acidity and great flavor delineation. It will not disappoint. Should hit maturity in 7-9 years, will hold for 15+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 165 hours and was punched down by hand 2 times each day during macerations and fermentation.100% native ferment. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 40% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 60% neutral French oak. The wine was not racked and remained on its lees until bottling. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees. The wine has not been fined.

The 2015 ‘Tilting At Windmills’ by Rasa Vineyards is an inspiration by head winemaker Billo Naravane to make a Washington wine in the style of the profound red wines of Priorat. It is a sexy blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah which was aged in 40% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 60% neutral French oak prior to bottling. This wine begins with aromatics of black tea, black olive, rose petals and suggestions of baking spices. This leads to dense flavors reminiscent of black tea, red cherry, raspberry jam and umami that sit alongside some moderate tannins. This wine is another stunner by superstar winemaker Billo Naravane. Drink 2017-2029.

A blend of 63% Grenache, 19% Syrah and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from the XL Vineyard in Walla Walla, the 2015 Tilting At Windmills is a youthful, sweetly fruited, hedonistic red that has plenty of elegance and purity in its black raspberry, cassis, spice and crushed flower aromas and flavors. It has plenty of sweet fruit, a charming, elegant, modern style and a good finish. It's going to be better in another year, and keep easily through 2025.

(15.6% alcohol; from XL vineyard in SeVein, planted in 2007 at 1,400 feet): Bright medium ruby-red. Lovely sour red candy nose, with complicating notes of darker berries, licorice and rose petal. Concentrated and velvety, with its dark berry fruit framed by ripe, harmonious acidity and supported by a firm tannic backbone. This is Naravane's lowest-yielding vineyard, as wind is a significant factor at this site, typically resulting in thick skins and tiny berries. Production was just 1.8 tons per acre in 2015. "It's like reining back a wild beast on the extraction side," said Naravane, noting that this wine often finishes its fermentation in barrel. Drinking Window: 2020 – 2028.
