2012 primus inter pares

Winemaker Notes: 100% Grenache from Monette’s Vineyard in “the Rocks” area of Walla Walla. This wine has a brilliant ruby color with an intense bouquet of kirsch, raspberry, rose, forest floor, orange peel, incense, and white pepper. Full bodied with penetrating, precise flavors of kirsch, raspberry, licorice, wild thyme, espresso, and stony minerality. Medium level of rich, silky tannins and crisp acidity help support the high intensity and high fruit concentration found in this wine. The wine will reach maturity in 6-8 years and provide pleasurable drinking for 12+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 153 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 35 hours. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 25% once-filled French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 75% neutral French oak. The wine was not racked and remained on its lees until bottling. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees. The wine has not been fined.

An awesome Grenache, the 2012 Primus Inter Pares comes from the Monette’s Vineyard in Walla Walla. Deep, rich and layered, with knockout black raspberry, kirsch, licorice and floral notes, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, sweet fruit and a seamless, elegant feel that stretches out beautifully on the finish. It’s a sexy, impeccably made Grenache to drink over the coming 8-10 years

91+ Points

High-toned rose petal perfume to the aromas of red raspberry, crushed rock, cocoa powder and cumin. Very dry and energetic but also offers an insidiously opulent fruit character to the flavors of cherry, Near Eastern spices and white pepper, as well as a sappy crushed-stone minerality. Very suave Grenache with a firm, long finish calling for a bit of patience.
