2015 primus inter pares

2015 primus inter pares
2015 primus inter pares

Winemaker Notes: Intense, hedonistic aromatics of kirsch and framboise with subtle notes of white pepper and rose. Velvety tannins and gentle, caressing acidity frame an exquisite palate density with well delineated flavors of kirsch, framboise, white pepper, tangerine peel, rose, and crushed rocks. Full bodied with an exceptionally long finish that echoes notes of kirsch and stony minerality. Quite possibly our best primus yet; fans of Grenache should not miss out on this one! It will be difficult to resist opening this wine early, but patience will be rewarded. The wine will reach maturity in 6-8 years and provide pleasurable drinking for 12+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 120 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 60 hours. The wine was punched down by hand 2 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: Elevage on fine lees for 18 months in neutral French oak barriques. The wine was neither fined nor racked and remained on its lees until gentle crossflow filtration prior to bottling.

This stunning Grenache wine was sourced from Monette's Vineyard in the Walla Walla Rocks region. Prior to bottling the wine was left on the lees for 18 months in neutral French oak barriques. This wine begins with aromatics of rose petals, white flowers, Mandarin orange rind and potpourri. This leads to flavors of red cherry, strawberry, orange zest and strawberry jam. This is pretty, feminine, sexy and absolutely irresistible at this juncture. While less acid-driven than the ’14 bottling, this outstanding wine is just as good and even more impossible to put down as the gorgeous aromatic and flavor range shows through. Only 103 cases made of this absolutely stunning Grenache wine which is one of the best of its kind in Washington state. Drink 2017-2029.

I always love the Grenache from these two brothers and the 2015 Grenache Primus Inter Pares is terrific. Its medium ruby color is followed by a sweet, perfumed nose of kirsch liqueur, creme de cassis, vanilla bean and spring flowers. Elegant, silky and lightly textured, yet not light on flavor or length. Give bottles a year or two in the cellar.

Oct. 2017

(15.4% alcohol; fermented with wild yeasts in neutral oak puncheons, with uncrushed berries on top of 20% whole clusters): Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of strawberry, cherry and spices. Dense and tactile, offering a lovely combination of creamy and fresh elements. Fine-grained plum, cherry and spice flavors carry through to a smooth, long finish that shows surprising energy. The wine's elevated alcohol is nicely buffered by a saline quality. This is Naravane's favorite vintage to date for this Grenache bottling. Drinking Window: 2017 – 2021.
