2015 Living in the Limelight

2015 Living in the Limelight
2015 Living in the Limelight

Winemaker Notes: Saturated dark purple in color with intense notes of ripe blackberry, black raspberry, black plum, huckleberry, clove, and smoldering incense. On the palate, high intensity flavors of blackberry, huckleberry, licorice, gravel, and dark chocolate. Nuances of dark chocolate, vanilla, and tar resonate on the long finish. High glycerol and high levels of dry extract with ripe, luscious tannins and vibrant acidity. With a proper decant, this wine can be enjoyed in the next year or two. It should reach optimal maturity in 6-8 years and hold for 10+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 155 hours and was punched down by hand 2 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 35% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 65% neutral French oak. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 3 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very gently filtered using crossflow filtration.

The 2015 Rasa ‘Living in the Limelight’ Petit Verdot is one of the best of its kind that I have sampled in the past year. An only dark color opens to aromatics reminiscent of green olive, black peppercorn, mocha and creme de cassis. This leads to deep flavors of black cherry cough syrup, black tea, black olive tapenade and coffee grounds. This is a massive wine. Drink 2018-2033.

I always love this cuvee from this estate, and the 2015 Living In The Limelight is another ripe, sexy, yet still incredibly elegant red that delivers the goods. Blue fruits, leafy herbs, spring flowers and graphite all flow to a full-bodied, ripe, heady and seamless Petit Verdot that has nicely integrated acidity, fine tannin and a great finish. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age and should see its 20th birthday in fine form. As always, this cuvee is 100% Petit Verdot from the Dionysus Vineyard in the Columbia Valley.

(15.1% alcohol; 40% new oak): Bright red-ruby. Inky, brooding aromas of blackberry, licorice, violet and black pepper. Broader and fatter than the QED Axiom of Choice Cabernet Franc but still a dark, powerful wine. In fact, this is a step up in mid-palate density and sweetness, but with plenty of supporting energy. The wine's substantial tannins will require patience. Billo Naravane told me that he extracts this fruit very gently, "almost like Pinot Noir," doing fewer punchdowns and keeping the temperature from exceeding 85 degrees F, which he says preserves the wine's violet high tones. Naravane fermented this wine in a once-used and a twice-used puncheon, simply removing the heads of the puncheons. Drinking Window: 2019 – 2026.
