2014 Plus One

2014 Plus One
2014 Plus One

Winemaker Notes: This is our 6th vintage of Plus One, and it is quite possibly our best. It reminds me of a blend of our 2009 and 2012 Plus One with amped up intensity. Deep ruby-purple color with impeccable balance, exceptional complexity, and a fine, long finish. Well delineated notes of black cherry, cassis, graphite, tar, orange peel, espresso, nutmeg, and dried herbs on the bouquet. The palate offers a significant core of fruit with notes of cassis, blackberry, black cherry, espresso, gravel, vanilla, anise, allspice, incense, and cigar tobacco. The very long vibrant finish has notes of cassis, thyme, leather, and cigar tobacco. Substantial tannins with a slight firmness that will require some patience. As usual this is a classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon. It should hit maturity in 8-10 years and gracefully evolve for 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 145 hours. 100% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 2 times each day during maceration and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 3 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

A big, burly, concentrated Cabernet is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Kiona Vineyard Plus One, which comes all from the Kiona Vineyard on Red Mountain. Loaded with minerality, full-bodied, heady, and concentrated, it offers sensational notes of black fruits, smoked earth, charcoal, graphite and saddle leather. This beauty isn't going to be for the traditionalist (it checks in at over 15% alcohol), but is impeccably balanced, textured and seamless. Forget bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.

The 2014 ‘Plus One’ Cabernet was aged in 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The resultant wine is a stunner. This absolutely awesome Cabernet wine begins with aromas of baking spices, black cherry, sagebrush and creme de cassis. This leads to polished flavors of black tea, mocha, black cherry cough syrup and boysenberry preserves with coffee grounds. This is massive and has a polished mouthfeel. Try to give this gorgeous wine another year to settle. Drink 2018-2035.

(15.1% alcohol; from the old block here, planted in 1974; made in 100% new French oak puncheons, then aged for 30 months in 60% new barriques and puncheons): Bright ruby-red. Classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of cassis, mocha and dusty tobacco leaf, complemented by sexy oak tones. A large-scaled, velvety wine with terrific depth and creamy old-vines texture to its flavors of currant, tobacco, cedar and gravel. Plush and thick but lively too, finishing with rich, fully buffered tannins.Drinking Window: 2019 – 2028.
