2013 Vox Populi

2013 Vox Populi
2013 Vox Populi

Winemaker Notes: 100% Mourvedre from Monette's Vineyard in “the Rocks” area of Walla Walla. This wine has a medium dense ruby-purple color with an exotic bouquet of grilled meats, rubbed sage, bacon fat, white pepper, incense, lavender, and scorched earth. The palate follows through on the aromatic complexity with penetratingly deep flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, white pepper, smoked meat, bacon fat, sage, rosemary, and dark chocolate. The long, crisp finish has an exotic combination of smoke, earthiness, and minerality. This wine will hit maturity in 6-8 years and will hold for 15+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 135 hours and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine was not racked and remained on its lees until bottling. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees. The wine has not been fined.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak.

This 79 case production wine comes from the rocks in Walla Walla and was aged in 20% new French oak and 80% neutral French oak, being released in May of this year. This is a 100% Mouvedre wine from the Monette’s Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. Lovely smoky aromas of smoked pork shoulder, black olive, orange rind and black cherry. This is pretty shut down for more than two hours upon opening and needs more than an hour out of the bottle for the fruit to integrate. There are lovely red fruit Flavors of red cherry, raspberry and smoked meats as well. This mineral driven wine needs time to develop. (Best 2017-2030).

About as polished and elegant as Mourvedre gets, the 2013 Mourvedre Vox Populi gives up lots of ripe kirsch and blackberry fruits intermixed with lots of spice, dried herbs, incense and pepper. Charming, straightforward and a touch innocuous, it certainly doesn't scream Mourvedre, but it's balanced, polished and enjoyable. It should drink nicely through 2025.

(13.8% alcohol; native-yeast fermentation with one-third whole clusters, the rest whole berries): Deep medium red. Pungent aromas of crushed cherry and cherry skin, white pepper and game, with complicating hints of leather, cinnamon and tree bark. Very juicy, leanish and dry on the palate; doesn't quite deliver the flavor interest promised by the nose. Seems a bit youthfully imploded but the edgy tannins are under control.
