2013 The Composer

2013 The Composer
2013 The Composer

Winemaker Notes: Light straw in color, the wine offers superb aromatics of apple, pear, spice, petrol, and white flowers. The aromatic complexity follows through on the palate with notes of spice, mineral, wet stone, apple, pear, and lime. Nuances of mineral and petrol echo on the long, vibrant finish. High flavor intensity and concentration on a tight, linear frame. Properly cellared it should gracefully evolve over the next decade.

Cooperage: The wine greatly benefited from an 18 month elevage on fine lees in neutral oak barrels. 60% neutral oak fermentation, 40% stainless steel fermentation.

Fermentation: 100% Riesling, blend of 3 clones - Geisenheim 110, Geisenheim 198 and Neustadt 90 from Bacchus and Dionysus Vineyards. 10.9 g/L residual sugar, TA 7.4 g/L.

The 2013 ‘The Composer’ Riesling was produced from Geisenheim 110, Geisenheim 198 and Neustadt 90 clones which were sourced from the Bacchus and Dionysus Vineyards. The Riesling weighs in at 10.9 g/L residual sugar, and the wine was aged in 60% neutral oak fermentation, and 40% stainless steel fermentation. Done in the Alsatian style, this rear Riesling wine begins with aromatics of Granny Smith apple, wet rock, petrol and cantaloupe. This lead to flavors of white flowers, Gravenstein apple and green papaya. This finishes extremely long as this wine is up there with the best Washington Rieslings out there. Drink 2017-2026.

Pale yellow-gold. Fresh apricot and orange blossom scents, along with hints of spiced nuts and vanilla; shows a positive slightly oxidative character. Lush and concentrated but nicely dry, with a distinctly saline minerality to the flavors of stone fruits, citrus zest, pear and wet-stone minerality. A distinctly spicy phenolic edge gives the wine grip and tension and buffers its moderate residual sugar (11.2 grams per liter). This wine is carrying just 11.9% alcohol, along with healthy 7.8 grams of acidity.

Made in a clean, crisp Kabinett style, the 2013 Riesling The Composer offers lots of apple blossom, honeysuckle and buttered citrus qualities to go with a medium-bodied, supple, nicely textured and rounded feel on the palate. Aged 18 months in neutral oak, it has good, not great, acidity, excellent purity of fruit and a clean finish. It's a good Riesling to enjoy over the coming couple of years.
