2013 Living in the Limelight

2013 Living in the Limelight
2013 Living in the Limelight

Winemaker Notes: Deep dark purple in color with perfumed notes of violets, marionberry, mulberry, sandalwood, clove, and incense. On the palate high intensity flavors of marionberry, huckleberry, black plum, roasted herbs, and black licorice on the palate supported by ripe tannic structure and vibrant acidity. Additional nuances of dark chocolate, clove, earth, and tar notes appear on the long finish. The wine is very concentrated with high amounts of dry extract. This wine can be enjoyed in the next year or two for its youthful exuberance, but 6-8 years of patience will be generously rewarded with added layers of complexity, will hold for 12+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 132 hours and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 3 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very gently filtered using crossflow filtration.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 30% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 70% neutral French oak.

This Petit Verdot was sourced from the Dionysus vineyard. The wine begins with aromas of black olive, blackberry and sagebrush. Somewhat shut down aromatically for the first hour and needing a long decant to unwind. Currently displaying deep flavors of blackberry, mocha, green olive and an intense herbal character. The wine is highly tannic and need some time in the bottle right now, so try to resist for another year. One of the best bottlings of this varietal that I have seen from Washington. (Best 2017-2027).

Checking in as 100% Petit Verdot and all from the Dionysus Vineyard, which is a warmer site that has plantings going all the way back to the early '70s, the 2013 Living In The Limelight sports an inky purple color to go with terrific notes of black and blue fruits, spring flowers, sappy herbs and hints of crushed rock on the nose. A big, full-bodied and concentrated wine, it has beautiful purity of fruit, lots of flavor authority, fine tannin and a big finish where it shows plenty of freshness and focus. It's surprisingly approachable already, yet given the variety, its purity of fruit and its solid underlying tannic structure, I suspect it will cruise in the cellar for at least another 10-15 years.

(14.8% alcohol): Deep, saturated ruby. Sour blueberry and blackberry candy along with tropical bitter chocolate and brown spices on the nose. Quite tightly wound, but this bomb of black and blue fruits conveys outstanding precision and lift without coming off as particularly musclebound in the early going. In fact, this Petit Verdot delivers captivating juicy sweetness for such a powerful wine--and for the variety.
