2012 Vox Populi

2012 Vox Populi
2012 Vox Populi

Winemaker Notes: 100% Mourvedre – 2/3 from Monette's Vineyard in “the Rocks” area of Walla Walla and 1/3 from Alder Ridge Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills. This wine has a medium dense ruby-purple color with an exotic bouquet of grilled meats, bacon fat, white pepper, incense, lavender, and scorched earth. The palate follows through on the aromatic complexity with rich, deep flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, cassis, white pepper, bacon fat, espresso, and dark chocolate. The long finish has an exotic combination of smoke, earthiness, and minerality. This wine will hit maturity in 6-8 years and will hold for 15+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 120 hours and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine was not racked and remained on its lees until bottling. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees. The wine has not been fined.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak.

This wine with 14.1% natural alcohol was released in May 2014 and comes from the rocks in Walla Walla. Ripe fruit nose with blackberry, cassis and black olive alongside smoked meats. This is a rich and viscous palate, that separates itself from others and captures great vintage. Wonderful depth with flavors of blackberry pie, creme de cassis, anise, cherry cola and red currant with a long, 20 plus second finish. This is the best Washington Mouvedre I've had in the past 10 years. (Best 2015-2030)

The Mourvedre-dominated 2012 Vox Populi is a beautiful effort. Layered and ripe, with plenty of sweet blackberry, black raspberry, spice-box, dried flowers and pepper, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, beautifully polished tannin, and good overall concentration and length. Blossoming in the glass, it has a level of polish and texture that allows it to drink nicely even now, yet it should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years as well.

Bright medium red-ruby. Subtly complex, perfumed aromas of raspberry, blackberry pie, black licorice, exotic spices, rose petal and leather. At once sweet and penetrating, showing a peppery intensity to the sappy flavors of raspberry, flowers and minerals. Not a funky Rocks style but high in acidity for a wine from this appellation. Finishes classically dry and very long, with round, fine-grained tannins and attractive sweetness.
