2012 QED Convergence

2012 QED Convergence
2012 QED Convergence

Winemaker Notes: The 2012 QED reflects the generous warmth of the vintage with voluptuous fruit, massive structure, and ripe tannins. To understand the effects of the growing season, it is quite instructive to have this wine side-by-side with the 2011 QED, which was from a markedly cool year. The 2012 QED has aromatics of ripe blueberry, blackberry, kirsch, white pepper, and scorched earth. This is a very complex wine on the palate: kirsch, raspberry, pomegranate, blackberry, garrigue, white pepper, smoked meat, white pepper, vanilla, and incense. The rich mouthfeel, high fruit intensity, crisp acidity, substantial yet ripe tannins all suggest good aging potential. It should hit maturity in 6-8 years and drink well over the next 15+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration average of 146 hours and a post-fermentation maceration average of 84 hours. Native fermentation was used on 75% of the lots. 20% whole clusters were used to give added structure. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak. The wine had an elevage of 30 months in oak and was racked three times but not fined.

Composed of 69% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, and 4% Viognier, this wine shows a deep ruby color and a rich, smoky nose of raspberry, huckleberry, cassis, crushed roses, mulberry, brambles, garrigue, and smoldering incense. On the palate, the flavors are thick and penetrating, comprising of dark, meaty fruits that are mixed with dark chocolate, Sumatra roast and earthy minerals. On the back, a chewy texture emerges, with sensations of macerated berries, roasted nuts, leather, toffee and charcoal, followed by a lingering ripe, grainy tannin finish.

This wine was stored for 30 months in 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak. It opens with somewhat muted aromas of blackberry, blueberry and sagebrush. There are flavors of blackberry, anise and blueberry. This has incredible acidity and balance. This is an expressive wine that improves with an hour in the glass. Bilo Naravane has done it again. (Best 2015-2028)

A blend of mostly Syrah, yet with 15% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre and a splash of Viognier, the 2012 QED Convergence (the classic QED blend, yet they're now releasing a QED Axiom of Choice, hence the addition of Convergence on the name) sports a mostly opaque ruby color to go with terrific notes of mulled black berries, hints of chocolate, dried spices and cassis. This gives way to a full-bodied, layered and seamlessly textured 2012 that has a solid mid-palate, ripe, polished tannin and a great finish. This is a classic Syrah blend from this team that has both complexity and texture. Given its overall balance, it's beautiful even today, yet I suspect it will have 10-12 years of overall longevity.

(15.1% alcohol; vinified with 33% whole clusters, the rest whole berries): Deep dark ruby. Black raspberry, bitter chocolate, licorice pastille and violet on the nose. Very concentrated and dry, almost bitter, showing a chewy texture, a note of dark chocolate and strong medicinal reserve. Firmly structured wine with youthfully tough tannins and good verve. This blend may be going through a sullen stage today.
