2012 Principia Reserve Syrah

2012 Principia Reserve Syrah
2012 Principia Reserve Syrah

Winemaker Notes: Dark purple color with bouquet of tar, bacon fat, spice, blackberry compote, black plum, and scorched earth. There are also hints of floral tones. The aromatic complexity follows through on the palate with well delineated flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, black olive, espresso, bacon fat, black pepper, dark chocolate, leather, cigar tobacco, and garrigue. The very long finish echoes tones of earth, bacon fat, and cigar tobacco. Impressive structure with exquisite balance, the wine will continue to improve for the next 8-10 years and should drink well for the next 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration average of 146 hours and a post-fermentation maceration average of 84 hours. Native fermentation was used on 75% of the lots. 20% whole clusters were used to give added structure. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak. The wine had an elevage of 30 months in oak and was racked three times but not fined.

This beautiful Syrah was sourced from the Les Collines, and Seven Hills vineyards, weighing in at 15.1% alcohol – but you wouldn’t know it from the mid-palate. It opens with a smoky nose with smoked meats, bacon fat, blackberry, in this expressively aromatic wine. This is amazing acid structure and has flavors of black olive, blackberry, black cherry and anise. Wonderful terroir and balance, one of the best Syrahs from this fantastic vintage. (Best 2015-2028).

The estate's reserve Syrah, the 2012 Syrah Principia Reserve comes all from Walla Walla and is 100% Syrah. It has lots of graphite, wood smoke, black fruits and assorted roasted meat-like qualities (chocolate-dusted roast?) that flow nicely to a rich, powerful, full-flavored 2012 that has lots of texture, building fine tannin and a great finish. Possessing more depth and richness than the Bacchus Syrah, yet still light on its feel, balanced and classically structured, it will benefit from short-term cellaring and hold nicely through 2025.

Deep ruby colored, this Syrah exhibits a deep ruby color and a rich, smoky nose of wild blackberries, mountain blueberries and black currants, with scents of crushed roses, mulberry, pipe tobacco, olive tapenade, garrigue, and smoldering spiced oriental incense. The flavors are deep and dense, marked by notes of licorice, dark chocolate, Sumatra roast, and stone and loam earth. The back reveals macerated berries, roasted nuts, leather, grilled meats, and burnt charcoal, followed by a super rich, chewy spice and herb dusted long finish.

(15.1% alcohol; 40% new oak; a blend of Les Collines and Seven Hills fruit): Deep, saturated ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, pomegranate, bitter chocolate and sexy mocha oak. Juicier by far than the Doctrina Perpetua Syrah, showing more give and distinctly sappy fruit flavors of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate complicated by espresso and bitter chocolate. Finishing with serious building tannins and terrific energy, this Syrah should be long-lived.
