2012 Plus One

2012 Plus One
2012 Plus One

Winemaker Notes: Deep ruby color with a layered bouquet of cassis, black plum, orange peel, nutmeg, rose petal, graphite, and herbs. The wine is tightly wound with palate notes of cassis, blackberry, espresso, gravel, minerals, black licorice, nutmeg, thyme, and cigar tobacco. The very long vibrant finish has notes of orange peel, cassis, leather, and cigar tobacco. The tannins are ripe with a slight firmness. Overall the wine has great balance, elegance, and concentration. It is a classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon that should hit maturity in 8-10 years and gracefully evolve for 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 160 hours. 50% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during maceration and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak.

This is old vine Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon in spades. Semi opaque ruby colored, it emits intense aromas of wild blackberries and cherries, Damson plums, crushed roses, tobacco, sandalwood, black olive, rosemary and sage. The flavors, as well, are concentrated, composed of dark fruits, underlain with licorice, dark chocolate, French roast and Red Mountain scorched earth and minerals. The back reveals macerated berries and roasted nuts, mocha, toffee, graphite and toasty oak, followed by a savory, herbed and spiced ripe, grainy tannin finish.

94 Points

This is from Kiona vineyard Cabernet from their oldest block. There are aromas of blackberry, cassis, anise, red bell pepper and spice cake. There are flavors of anise, blackberry, black olive and black cherry. This has incredible weight and balance. A compelling effort that head winemaker, Bilo Navarene thinks will age gracefully for 15-20 years. While it definitely has the balance to drink for many years to come, it is hard to put down now. (Best 2015-2035)

Showing slightly more oak and chocolate than the Perfect Union release, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kiona Vineyard Plus One offers lots of chocolaty dark fruits, espresso, roasted herbs and graphite to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant, nicely textured and structured profile on the palate. Shining for its elegance and balance, drink it anytime over the coming 10-15 years.

Bright medium ruby. Blackcurrant, tobacco, coffee and earth on the nose, with herbal and minty nuances adding another dimension. Slightly rough in its youth but layered and sweet, conveying terrific depth to its dark berry and spicy herb flavors. The tannins spread out to saturate the palate and build without turning dry. This will need patience.
