Winemaker Notes: Finesse, power, complexity, and impeccable balance, this wine has it all. Deep dark purple in color with perfumed notes of violets, marionberry, mulberry, sandalwood, and dark chocolate. Intense notes of marionberry, huckleberry, black cherry, roasted herbs, and black licorice on the palate supported by ripe tannic structure and vibrant acidity. Additional nuances of dark chocolate, vanilla, espresso, earth, and tar notes appear on the long finish. The wine is very concentrated with high amounts of dry extract. This wine can be enjoyed in the next year or two for its youthful exuberance, but 6-8 years of patience will be generously rewarded with added layers of complexity, will hold for 12+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 157 hours and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 30% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 70% neutral French oak.

The 2012 Living in the Limelight is 100% Petit Verdot from the Dionysus Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA. Perfumed, complex and lively, with ample currants, plum, licorice, mint and crushed rock-like minerality, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, awesome freshness and sweet tannin that emerges on the finish. Nothing is out of place here, it’s perfectly balanced and has rock star length. Give it another handful of years in the cellar and enjoy it over the following decade or longer. When all is said and done, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this still going strong at age 20 or beyond.

Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of blackberry, licorice and fruity Tellicherry pepper. At once sweet and sappy, offering moderate complexity today but excellent lift to the extremely primary, almost inky dark berry and pepper flavors. Showed the mid-palate creaminess of the vintage as it opened in the glass. Finishes with building tannins. I’d love to revisit this splendid petit verdot in ten years.
