Winemaker Notes: This is our first 100% merlot, and since we have just a few precious drops it will be hand-bottled in magnums only. This merlot has a deep ruby-purple color and a complex bouquet of crème de cassis, black plum, forest floor, nutmeg, rose petal, and gravel. On the palate there are intensely rich notes of creme de cassis, black raspberry, crushed flowers, licorice, cigar tobacco, and vanilla. Substantial minerality and gravel notes extend into the very long finish. Full-bodied with supple and seductive palate that firms up beautifully on the finish. Substantial fruit but perfectly balanced with the crisp acidity and underlying silky tannic structure. Properly cellared, this wine should hit maturity in 8-10 years and gracefully evolve for 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 148 hours. 100% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during maceration and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very gently filtered using crossflow filtration.

Cooperage: Elevage was 30 months in 60% new French oak and 40% neutral French oak.

Saturated dark red with ruby tones. Expressive aromas of plum, currant, mocha, caramel, tobacco, licorice, mint and herbs. Fat, plush and sweet, combining lovely fruit intensity and terrific verve. Despite a rather voluptuous texture, this brilliant Merlot shows a light touch and good spicy lift to its redcurrant, plum and mineral flavors. The very suave tannins arrive late, allowing the fruit to expand on the back end. A silky yet serious Merlot with the concentration and grip to age gracefully. - Stephen Tanzer
