2012 Creative Impulse

2012 Creative Impulse
2012 Creative Impulse

Winemaker Notes: The blend for the Creative Impulse has reverted to Cabernet dominant with the 2012; it is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot. Each year we go into the blending session for the Creative Impulse with an open mind, the best blend wins, be it Cabernet dominant or Merlot dominant. Fans of DuBrul Vineyard will not be disappointed, this wine is a beauty! Dark ruby in color with a riveting bouquet: cassis, mint, menthol, violet, baking spices, earth, forest floor, and gravel. This gorgeous wine is multilayered with an incredibly long finish. Notes on the palate of ripe cassis, blackberry, mint, violet, cedar, tobacco, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, earth, gravel, and baking spices. Firm, powdery tannins with crisp acidity and high palate concentration and complexity ensure a great future. The vibrant, long finish echoes notes of earth, cigar tobacco, mint, and thyme. This wine should reach maturity in 10-12 years, and properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 175 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 107 hours. The wine was fermented with 100% native yeasts and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The wine had an elevage of 31 months in French Oak puncheons. The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The wine was racked three times and not fined.

(This 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot combination offers a deep ruby color and a sensuous nose of blackberry, cherry, plum, orange peel, black roses, olive tapenade, tobacco, and smoldering incense. The flavors are thick and concentrated, marked by licorice, Swiss chocolate, French roast and stony minerality. The back picks up roasted berries and nuts, mocha, toffee, kidskin, graphite, and toasty oak, followed by a dusting of spices (clove, nutmeg) and herbs (cardamom, sage) on the lingering sweet-dry tannin finish. This shows power and elegance throughout.

This outstanding Bordeaux style red is a heavyhitter. Comprised of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, the wine opens with a complex nose with red bell pepper, cherry pie and dill with sagebrush in this herbaceous and terroir driven nose. There are flavors of red cherry, cherry tomato, raspberry, blackberry and anise. This is a rockstar wine that is balanced, rich and has an incredible mouthfeel. This long ager has 152 cases made so grab some before it sells out. (Best 2015-2035).

Coming all from the Dubrul Vineyard in Yakima Valley and a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, the 2012 Creative Impulse Dubrul Vineyard has a more savory character in its black and red currants, black cherry, toasted spice, tobacco and dried-herb bouquet. This gives way to a big, ripe, layered and sexy 2012 that has medium to full-bodied richness, a rocking core of sweet fruit and a big finish. Like all of the wines here, the tannin is nicely polished and builds incrementally through the mid-palate and finish. Much more red fruit and spice-driven than the other Bordeaux blends here, it's not a classic Cabernet, yet has tons of character and should have 15 years or more of longevity, and drink nicely for most of it!

Bright medium ruby. Very complex nose melds red- and blackcurrant, raspberry, mocha, graphite and aged cigar tobacco lifted by a note of violet. Offers a compellingly lush, silky texture with seductive pliancy to its densely packed flavors of currant, minerals and spices. This wonderfully elegant blend unwinds slowly in the mouth, finishing very long and ripely tannic. Delivers superb flavor impact without coming across as overly powerful.
