2011 Vox Populi

2011 Vox Populi
2011 Vox Populi

Winemaker Notes: 100% Mourvedre from Monette's Vineyard in “the Rocks” area of Walla Walla. This wine has a medium dense purple color with an exotic bouquet of white pepper, bacon fat, grilled meats, incense, lavender, and scorched earth. The palate follows through on the aromatic complexity with notes of black cherry, white pepper, bacon fat, grilled meat, espresso, dark chocolate, and a deep sense of earthiness and minerality. The rich complexity, refreshing acidity, and well-modulated tannins all but ensure that you will reach for a second bottle. This wine will hit maturity in 6-8 years and will hold for another 10 years after that.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 120 hours and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 25% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 75% neutral French oak. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 3 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

This wine comes off the rocks in Walla Walla and from a cold vintage. Somewhat subdued nose with black cherry, cassis and smoked meats. Lovely terroir on the palate with Flavors of blackberry, black cherry, smoked pork shoulder and minerals. This wine needs time, but you can really taste the Walla Walla rocks character. 3.1% alcohol; vinified with 20% whole clusters): Good bright, deep red. Plum, black raspberry, leather, licorice and white pepper on the expressive nose, accented by spices and botanical herbs. Leanish and penetrating, showing terrific juicy cut to its energetic berry and spice flavors. With its dusty tannins and serious grip and bite, this should make a particularly flexible food wine.

The 2011 Vox Populi is 100% Mourvedre that’s all from the Monette’s Vineyard in The Rocks region of Walla Walla and was aged in 25% new French oak. The first year this cuvee has been from a single vineyard, it has a decidedly fresh profile, with bright red fruits, white pepper, sappy flowers and tree bark-like qualities on the nose. This carries to a medium-bodied Mourvedre that has a light, clean texture, juicy acidity and solid length on the finish. More perfumed, elegant and lighter weight than prior vintages, it should evolve positively for 2-3 years and drink nicely for a decade. Drink now-2020.
