Winemaker Notes: 100% Grenache from Monette's Vineyard in “the Rocks” area of Walla Walla. This wine has medium dense purple color with a positively riveting bouquet of kirsch, raspberry, cherry blossom, minerals, and white pepper. The wine is a bit of a paradox: nuanced and delicate with exceptional purity and density of flavor. Silky tannins frame an incredibly rich and complex palate with seductive notes of kirsch, raspberry, strawberry, minerals, violet, licorice, and white pepper. The wine has an exuberant youthful quality that predicts a long life ahead. The wine will evolve gracefully for 12-15 years and will likely hit its optimum drinking window in 6-8 years. Harvest date: October 23, 3011.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 146 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 55 hours. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 20% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 80% neutral French oak.

Looking at the reds, the 2011 Grenache Primus Inter Pares is an outstanding 100% Grenache that’s all from the rocky, pebble soils of Monette’s Vineyard in Walla Walla. Provencal in style, with loads of sweet red fruits, spice, herbes de Provence, pepper and assorted floral notes, it is a medium-bodied, supple and downright sexy effort geared for drinking over the coming 5-8 years. Good bright medium red. Cherry, menthol and mint on the polite nose and palate, lifted by spicy high notes. Offers good texture and intensity but a slight minty green streak runs through the wine. Best today on the persistent, vibrant finish, which features substantial dusty tannins and lingering notes of red cherry and raspberry. A second bottle added a pinot-like floral quality and hints of cherry liqueur and licorice.
