2011 Plus One

2011 Plus One
2011 Plus One

Winemaker Notes: This wine fully delivers on the elegance and finesse of the cooler 2011 vintage. The wine has a deep ruby color and a complex bouquet of cassis, rose petal, forest floor, mint, and graphite. The wine has tightly wound core marked by cassis, gravel, minerals, black licorice, baking spices, lavender, thyme, and cigar tobacco. The fine, powdery tannins and high vibrant acidity provide a strong foundation for ageability. The very long finish picks up notes of leather, tobacco, and hints of scorched earth and orange peel. This wine combines depth, finesse, elegance, and concentration in a classic style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Properly cellared, this wine should hit maturity in 8-10 years and gracefully evolve for 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 140 hours. 80% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during maceration and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 50% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 50% neutral French oak.

Bright, deep medium ruby. Brooding but pure nose hints at blackberry, black raspberry and licorice. Then surprisingly sweet, creamy and deep, offering serious density without any undue weight. The black fruit and enticing oak flavors are pliant and utterly suave. Finishes very long and subtle, with serious mouthdusting, noble tannins. A lovely Red Mountain cabernet in the making, but give it time.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Kiona Vineyard Plus One is a classically styled effort that offers up loads of tobacco leaf, olive tapenade, lead pencil shavings and dark fruits to go with a medium to full-bodied, structured, firm, if not savory, profile on the palate. Give it 3 to 4 years of cellaring and drink bottles through 2026.
