2011 in Order to form a more perfect Union

Winemaker Notes: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc from Echo Ridge, DuBrul, Kiona, Dionysus, and Weinbau Vineyards. Deep ruby in color with intense aromatics of violets, black plum, cedar, tobacco, exotic spices, and gravel. On the palate the wine is rich, concentrated, complex, and elegant. The firm tannins and high acidity frame a gorgeous, multifaceted palate: layers of black plum, blackberry, cassis, violets, lead pencil, mint, aged cigar tobacco, exotic spices, earth, and gravel. The complex, long finish is well over a minute long with resonant notes of earth, tobacco, exotic spices, gravel, and dark chocolate. Properly cellared, this wine should reach maturity in 10-12 years will gracefully evolve for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration average of 205 hours and a post-fermentation maceration average of 64 hours. 100% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak.

The 2011 In Order To Form A More Perfect Union checks in as a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Giving up plenty of cedar, spice box, spring flowers and black currant styled aromas and flavors, this medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless effort has juicy acidity, excellent concentration (especially in the vintage) and superb underlying structure. It will evolve nicely over the coming 3 to 4 years and drink well through 2026.

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of cherry, red licorice, minerals and charred oak. Deep, ripe and sweet, conveying strong energy and definition to the ripe raspberry and spice flavors. Finishes impressively long, with wonderfully ripe, chewy, seamless tannins and lingering notes of dark chocolate and sappy minerality. Another classic example of the way the best 2011s combine density of texture, nobility of tannins and outstanding inner-palate verve.
