2011 Doctrina Perpetua

2011 Doctrina Perpetua
2011 Doctrina Perpetua

Winemaker Notes: Doctrina Perpetua means “Forever Learning.” Every vintage is a learning experience and you need to pay attention to what the vines are telling you. We work closely with Vineyard Manager Derek Way and General Manager Kent Waliser to get the best out of this world-class vineyard. Our first vintage of Doctrina was from a hot vintage – 2009. Our second vintage is from a cool vintage – 2011. When tasting the wines together, the vintage differences are obvious. But, the terroir of Block 5, Bacchus Vineyard is undeniable. The 2009 Doctrina was a huge hit for us (94 points from Stephen Tanzer). Yet, my preference is for the the cooler vintages and I love the 2011 Doctrina. The 2011 Doctrina Perpetua celebrates Baruch Spinoza – one of history's most important philosophers. This compelling wine offers up a bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, black cherry, cassis, oak, earth, truffle, mocha, and vanilla. The wine is medium to full-bodied with highly intense focused flavors. The tannins are substantial yet silky. On the palate there are notes of black raspberry, cassis, blueberry, black cherry, mocha, dark chocolate, vanilla, minerals, and earth. The resonant, silky finish is delicious and seemingly endless. The wine is beautifully balance with wonderful acidity and great grip. Properly cellared this wine will hit maturity in 8-10 years and will easily hold for another 10 years after that.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 140 hours. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 50% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 50% neutral French oak.

One of the more tight and backward releases, the 2011 Syrah Spinoze is a 100% Syrah that comes from the Bacchus vineyard. Exhibiting outstanding, complex aromas and flavors of black cherries, cedar box, dried herbs and tinges of graphite, this medium-bodied, focused and layered effort has juicy acidity and a terrific finish. Give it a year or two and drink over the following decade.

Complex aromas of raspberry, smoky minerals and mocha are lifted by sexy spices. Juicy, savory and firm on the palate, with bright acidity giving grip to the flavors of red berries, spices, pepper and smoke. No easy sweetness here. Very tight but persistent today, in need of a few years in bottle to resolve its firm tannins.
