2010 Principia Reserve Syrah

2010 Principia Reserve Syrah
2010 Principia Reserve Syrah

Winemaker Notes: The aromatics are so complex and interesting that you may forget to taste the wine: crushed rocks, blackberry, tar, bacon fat, black pepper, garrigue, with hints of vanilla and espresso. The aromatic complexity follows through on the palate with blackberry, black raspberry, espresso, roasted meat, black pepper, dark chocolate, vanilla, and garrigue. The palate is silky and concentrated yet vibrant. Like its predecessors this Principia has a hedonistic finish that is seemingly endless. Properly cellared, the wine will continue to improve for the next 10-12 years and will hold for approximately 20-25 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 160 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 65 hours. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. 50% of the lots comprising the blend were fermented with native yeasts. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 3 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The wine had an elevage of 28 months in French Oak. The oak profile is 25% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 75% neutral French oak.

Good bright, deep red. Red berries, cherry, cocoa powder and licorice on the scented nose. Supple, saline and balanced but youthfully backward, offering red berry and floral flavors complicated by sexy spice notes (from the Allier oak barrels?). No easy sweetness here. Finishes with building, serious tannins that will require at least a few years of cellaring.

This 125 case production Syrah was sourced from Les Collines Vineyard and Seven Hills Vineyard. This weighs in at 14.4% alcohol but you wouldn’t know it from tasting the wine. Lovely rich aromas of milk chocolate, sagebrush, Espresso bean and red currant. Flavors of raspberry, red cherry, pomegranate, roasted figs and milk chocolate. The finish lingers for 20 plus seconds. Lovely minerality in this exceptionally constructed cool year and terroir driven wine. (Best 2015-2024)

Vibrant, with refreshing acidity to balance the rich, fleshy blackberry and black currant flavors, persisting impressively on the long, expressive finish. Shows depth and focus. Best from 2015 through 2020..

More bright, lifted and perfumed, with racy acidity and less bass notes, the 2010 Syrah Reserve Principia is the estate’s top Syrah and comes from a cellar selection of barrels. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, pure and lively, with notions of graphite, violets, roasted meats and toast lending complexity to a core of raspberry ganache-like fruit, it too doesn’t lack for texture or flavor and carries itself beautifully. A handful of years in the cellar seem warranted here, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it show just as good at age 15. Drink now-2025.
