2010 in Order to form a more perfect Union

2010 in Order to form a more perfect Union

Winemaker Notes: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc from Echo Ridge, DuBrul, Kiona, Dionysus, and Weinbau Vineyards. Deep ruby in color with intense aromatics of cassis, black plum, violet, cedar, tobacco, black olive, exotic spices, and gravel. On the palate the wine is concentrated and rich with beautiful texture and amazing complexity. The tannins have a sublime silkiness. This gorgeous wine displays multifaceted layers of blackberry, cassis, black plum, lead pencil, mint, eucalyptus, tobacco, exotic spices, earth, and gravel. The decadent, almost haunting, finish is well over a minute long with resonant notes of earth, exotic spices, gravel, and dark chocolate. Properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration average of 157 hours and a post-fermentation maceration average of 64 hours. 50% Native fermentation. The wine was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine achieved its sparkly brilliance from 4 judicious rackings, no fining agents were employed. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak.

A step up, the 2010 In Order to Form a More Perfect Union is a decadent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that was aged in 60% new French oak. Offering up a hedonistically bent bouquet of black currant, smoked herbs, espresso, black olive and lead pencil shavings, it bursts onto the palate with a full-bodied, thick and voluptuous texture that partially conceals sound back-end concentration and structure. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following decade or longer. Drink now-2025.

Good bright, deep red. Red berries, cherry, cocoa powder and licorice on the scented nose. Supple, saline and balanced but youthfully backward, offering red berry and floral flavors complicated by sexy spice notes (from the Allier oak barrels?). No easy sweetness here. Finishes with building, serious tannins that will require at least a few years of cellaring.
