2010 Creative Impulse

2010 Creative Impulse
2010 Creative Impulse

Winemaker Notes: The 2010 Creative Impulse is a blend of 67.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32.5% Merlot from DuBrul Vineyard. Dark ruby in color with alluring aromatics of cassis, blackberry, mint, spice, smoke, and gravel. On the palate the wine is slightly firmer than the 2009 but it is just as concentrated and rich. It has a beautiful texture that displays firm yet silky tannins and amazing complexity. This gorgeous wine displays multifaceted layers of cassis, mint, violet, tobacco, smoke, earth, gravel, and gentle herbaceousness. The decadent finish is well over a minute long with resonant notes of earth, exotic spices, mint, and dark chocolate. This wine should reach maturity in 10-12 years, and properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 135 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 44 hours. The wine was fermented with 50% native yeasts and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine was racked three times and not fined. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Cooperage: The wine had an elevage of 28 months in French Oak. The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak.

Similarly styled, yet with a sweeter core of fruit and less herbal notes, the 2010 Creative Impulse DuBrul Vineyard is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that spent 28 months in 60% new French oak. A big, spice-laced and already complex 2010, it exhibits black raspberry-like fruit, spice-cabinet, toast, tobacco and dry aged beef qualities along with a full-bodied, decadent and creamily textured mouthfeel. As with the Perfect Union, it has solid, age-worthy structure under all of its fruit and will have 15+ years or more of prime drinking. Decant if drinking anytime soon. Drink 2016-2025.

This lightly filtered wine was aged 28 months in French Oak. The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The wine was made from 67.5% Cabernet and 32.5% Merlot. This DuBrul Vineyard wine has rich aromas of blackberry, anise, black cherry, smoke, black olive and dill. This is showing lovely terroir. Nice richness on the mid-palate that eclipses most people's '10 red efforts. Flavors of black cherry, creme de cassis, black olive, mocha and smoked meats. This is surprisingly Bordelaise in style. (Best 2015-2025)

Good full, bright red. Complex, expressive aromas of redcurrant, plum, mocha, coffee, cocoa powder, licorice and flowers. Silky, creamy and fine-grained but with very good medicinal reserve to its red fruit and spice flavors. Builds impressively on the very long back end, with noble tannins providing strong structural support without any rough edges. An outstanding blend.
