Winemaker Notes: The 2009 Creative Impulse is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot from DuBrul Vineyard. Deep rich purple in color with alluring aromatics of cassis, blackberry, mint, spice, smoke, and gravel. On the palate the wine is concentrated and rich with beautiful texture that displays full bodied silky tannins and amazing complexity. This gorgeous wine displays multifaceted layers of blackberry, cassis, mint, violet, tobacco, smoke, earth, and gravel. The decadent finish is well over a minute long with resonant notes of earth, exotic spices, and dark chocolate. Properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 20+ years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 155 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 62 hours. The wine was fermented with 50% native yeasts and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending. The wine had an elevage of 28 months in French Oak.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The wine was racked twice and not fined. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.

Composed of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot, this wine exhibits a brilliant ruby color and sultry, seductive aromas of blackberry, cherry, mulberry, tobacco, sandalwood, crushed rose, and orange peel, with whiffs of mint and smoldering incense. The full-bodied palate is saturated with deep, elegantly textured dark fruit flavors that are interwoven with licorice, Belgian chocolate, dark roasted coffee beans, mocha and Missoula Flood alluvial minerals. The back reveals a full spectrum of roasted berries, kirsch liqueur, spiced cherries, recurring orange peel and a touch of leather, followed by a lingering satiny tannin and deftly oaked (28 months in 60% new French) finish. The alcohol registers at 15.3%, but is tempered by superb acids (5.9 g/L) and a creamy, decadent texture. This will have a great future.

This Cabernet dominant blend, sourced from the DuBrul Vineyard, has 71% Cabernet with the rest Merlot. The wine opens with aromas of blackberry, coffee grounds, cassis and black olive. Delicious and rich mouthfeel with vibrant acidity. Open and forward style with anise, blackberry, black olive, milk chocolate and creme de cassis. Just delicious and makes you beg for another sip. (Best 2015-2025).
