2008 Creative Impulse

The 2008 Creative Impulse DuBrul Vineyard is our first Bordeaux blend and it just may be our best wine to date. When Dr. Shiels, owner of DuBrul Vineyard, offered us his fruit, we unhesitatingly accepted. DuBrul is one of the best vineyards in the country. This wine is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot. Aged in 60% new oak for 30 months, this wine is a stunner, reminding us of a classic Pauillac but with the undeniable terroir of DuBrul Vineyard.

Winemaker's Notes: The Creative Impulse is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot from DuBrul Vineyards. It was fermented with native yeasts and aged in 60% new French oak and 40% neutral French oak. The wine exhibits all the hallmarks of a world-class Cabernet Sauvignon: beautiful structure, complexity, and length. The riveting bouquet offers black currant, black cherry, mint, violet, vanilla, earth, and truffle. The sweet fruit  glides across the palate surrounded by cashmere-textured tannins. The intense finish hauntingly resonates for over two minutes. Properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 15-20 years.

Fermentation: The wine had a pre-fermentation maceration of 108 hours and a post-fermentation maceration of 38 hours. The wine was fermented with native yeasts and was punched down by hand 3 times each day during macerations and fermentation. All individual wine components, including free run and press fractions, were kept separate until final blending.

Cooperage: The oak profile is 60% new French oak (predominantly from Troncais and Alliers) and 40% neutral French oak. The wine was racked twice and not fined. The wine was very lightly filtered to capture any remaining lees.
